National NestBox Week NNBW starts on Valentines day. It is from this time that you should be putting a bird box up in your garden.
Whether you’re a family with space for a birdbox in your garden, a teacher, a member of a local wildlife group, or you belong to a bird club and could organise a work party, National Nest Box Week gives you the chance to contribute to the conservation effort in the UK. Take advantage of one of gardenature's February offers and purchase a bird box with camera giving you the pleasure of observing any number of breeding birds that you attract to your nest box.
Through the efforts of volunteers participating in BTO surveys, the bird populations of the British Isles have been monitored more effectively and for longer than those of most other parts of the world. This has produced a uniquely rich and detailed body of scientific work. This will help us to understand the complex challenges facing wild birds at a time of great change in the environment.
The BTO welcome volunteers of all ages and abilities to get involved with the work of the BTO. Over 40,000 people currently help out the BTO by recording the birds in their own gardens or the wider countryside. The results of these surveys are analyzed by BTO scientists to provide reliable, unbiased reports that are used to inform policy makers and conservation organisations about the state of the UK’s birds.
If you have time to volunteer for assisting the BTO with any of their surveys visit the BTO website - click here
Have you got time to spare Saturday 28th or Sunday 29th January ?

New website home page
If your a regular visitor no doubt you will have noticed the new look front page, we hope you like it!
We have tried to make the user experience easier by adding a few new features. With the ever increasing range of products it is always difficult to keep a clear and concise menu so that you can find what you are looking for. We have added the View Our Catalogue section to give you a pictorial menu overview. Dont forget to use the tabs across the top toolbar to get into other areas like the Advice section, this also leads you into some useful links as well as the hints and tips.
We are always pleased to hear your comments, so if you experience any difficulty or you like what we have done, please let us know as further improvements are on the way!
British Bird Fair 2011 Click Here
The Bird Fair (Aug 19 - 21st) was a tremendous success and much to our relief the weather in Rutland was unusually kind with just the odd shower but otherwise bright and sunny. Three very busy days of trading and as always it was a great pleasure to meet up with our customers for a good chat.
Another memorable event and many thanks to all who came along to meet some of our team, it was so nice to put faces to the names. Please keep in touch and visit us on gardenature Facebook (click here) for all the latest news, products and blogs.
Avian Pox in Garden Birds
Avian pox is a viral skin infection that shows up as unsightly growths on the bird, mainly on the head and neck, and at the base of the wings.
As yet this virus is rare in the UK so if you spot a bird displaying growths as described above please contact the RSPB by e-mail (click on this link) wildlife@rspb.org.uk or call 01767 693690 (Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm).

Bushnell Trophy Cam
The Bushnell Trophy Cam was reviewed in the Mail on Sunday's Live magazine 13th March 2011 by TV and film star Mackenzie Crook. Mackenzie Crook, star of Pirates of the Carribean & The Office, tested the unit on his private nature reserve, and said of the Trophy Cam "It is a solid piece of kit, the casing is robust and comes with heavy-duty clips and waterproofing strips to keep out damp".
"...Over the few days the images got a lot more interesting. The camera captured the most beautiful fox, rabbits and squirrels in a stand off with magpies... it will help me and the children learn more about how wildlife lives in its natural surroundings".

NATIONAL NESTBOX WEEK
Valentine's Day is the time when birds begin to pair up for the forthcoming breeding season so it is important to get your nestbox up as soon as possible, by the end of February beginning of March. That said, we have known boxes to be erected at the beginning of April which have successfully been occupied!
This winter has been the coldest for over thirty years and it will have undoubtedly taken its toll on some of our resident birds. National Nest Box Week 2011 can help provide the nesting space to help them this breeding season.
We know that some of our resident birds suffer during prolonged spells of snow cover and freezing temperatures. Preliminary results from the BTO’s Constant Effort Ringing Scheme show just how much birds were affected during the snow and ice of January 2010. Adult Robins were down by 27% compared to the five-year average, and Wrens were down by 20%. Both of these birds went on to have a good breeding season and productivity, the number of young produced, was up - 22% for Robin and 14% for Wren.
Given a good breeding season it is clear that these birds have the capacity to bounce back, and by providing a nest box you can offer them a helping hand.
Robins will use the open-fronted kind; (gardenature multi species nestboxes have a removeable front panel) whilst Wrens are known to use nest boxes to roost in overnight, the record number of Wrens in one box is 63, their shared body heat helping them through the cold night. However, there are lots of other types of nest boxes that can help some of our birds that are most in need. A nest box with a 45mm hole is suitable for Starlings; the population has declined by 79% over the last twenty-five years. House Sparrows will use a nest box but with a 35mm hole, their population has also shown worrying declines.
Whether you have a large garden in the country or a small garden in the middle of town, you will have space for a nest box. There are five things to consider when siting your box.
The new breeding season for garden birds is fast approaching! So if you have been lucky enough to receive one of our camera systems as a christmas gift, now is the perfect time to set up your Nest Box Camera ready for when the birds start prospecting for new nesting sites!
