Insect Conservation Study Centre

This is one of the best educational products when it comes to insect habitats! A truly stunning design, please click on the Gallery tab (above) for further images.

Features:

Chamber 1 - Solar Insect Attic

The top chamber features a solar light creating an illuminated chamber with access door at the back to allow the introduction of small twigs, moth or butterfly attractants etc. The solar light has an attracting effect and allows the study of moths and other nocturnal insects.  The solar light turns on automatically at dusk and then turn off at dawn. (The solar unit should be turned anti-clockwise and switched to on to allow initial charge in sunlight. The re-chargeable battery should last 12 months or more before requiring replacement).

Chamber 2 - Over Wintering Chamber

This is the traditional multi insect, over wintering area which will provide insulated nooks and crannies for a wide range of insects including ladybirds and lacewings. These are essential for organic gardening - being natural predators of aphids (greenfly and blackfly). This can help reduce and eliminate chemicals. This area will also be used by solitary bees.  Adjacent to this chamber and located on the front edge of the ‘A-shaped’ roof are the easy-access bee viewing tubes.  Arranged in pairs, these can be easily pulled open to view cell development of solitary bees or other insect activity.  Always ensure the tubes are gently pushed back into their respective holes to keep them in the dark and do not leave open for more than 30 minutes

Chamber 3 - Big Bug + Insect Inspection Cassette

This area has a giant magnifying glass concealed in the front door to form the big bug area where insects can be temporarily housed.  Insects can be studied insitu or at first hand by removing the new removable cassette for examination.  Although the cassette provides an attractive secure year-round insect habitat, it may be removed and as an alternative substituted by a food source or plant material attractive to insects.

Chamber 4 - The Lacewing Chamber

This is pre-filled with natural straw and provides the ideal over wintering space for lacewings which are voracious eaters of aphids (this area should be treated with Lacewing Attractant in the Autumn).  Lacewings are essential natural predators in an organic garden.  This chamber can also be filled with bark if required as an over wintering area for ladybirds and other insects.

Chamber 5 - Solitary Bee Study Chamber

Interactive Solitary Bee Study Chamber which features removable trays for the study of developing solitary bees. Solitary bees do not swarm, are non aggressive and SAFE around CHILDREN and PETS.  Ideally this chamber should be sited to catch the morning sun.

The Mason Bee (mud) and the Megachile Bee (leaf circles) will fill the chambers in Spring and Summer. From early Autumn the bolts at the base can be loosened to release the trays for inspection. The cell formation is fascinating and the eggs will develop over the winter into larvae and then bees . Sometimes predators will be seen. It is best to close the trays tightly after viewing and to restrict the opening of the trays to a maximum of 30 minutes.

Once used this solitary bee area will be regularly filled, the trays can easily be cleaned after emergence of the bees but the   solitary bees will clean the chambers themselves at the start of the new season. Because of the solid, well designed construction this unit can be left out over winter.  The Red Mason Bee (UK), Blue Orchard Bee (USA) and Megachile Bee (UK) are ESSENTIAL POLLINATORS for fruit, vegetables, herbs etc.

Siting and Maintenance - The Insect Conservation Study Centre should be sited in a warm sheltered position—ideally to catch the morning sun, approx 1 - 2.5 meters high. These units are made from quality timber and maintenance should be minimal. The solar light battery will need to be replaced annually and the wood can be treated with a clear water based sealer as required.

Important Information: These products are for wild creatures and as such, you should not expect immediate habitation. We suggest you carefully read the supplied instructions for siting and provide this product in a suitable habitat for the target species. The product can then be re-visited 6 - 12 months later, or in the appropriate season, to see if it is being used.

If after 24 months the product has not been used, it may be worth choosing an alternative location to site it and/or look to see what improvements you can make to provide a suitable environment for your target species (flowers, woodpiles, rough areas of garden etc)

Because many species of creature are constantly seeking refuge and safe nesting sites, you may find that an unexpected species is using your product - this is part of nature and all species should be welcomed as part of your wildlife garden.
